Adrian Simon – Growing up the son of a convicted drug trafficker , Milkblood is his story
Adrian Simon has faced so many hurdles and demons through his life and has emerged scarred but not broken. Exemplifying this, one of Adrian’s personal mantras is the Japanese proverb, “Fall seven times. Stand Eight”.
Having survived the ripple effect of his father’s continued actions, including a nervous breakdown at nine and a debilitating autoimmune disorder in his early thirties, Adrian has emerged an emotionally intelligent, highly functioning adult, ready to step firmly into whatever the future holds. As he says he is “walking into a bright future, whilst carrying a backpack full scars and war wounds.”
At 38 he has found clarity, purpose and a clear sense his own identity. His personal message resonated with other survivors, their friends and family and supporters.
As well as telling a compelling “larger than life” story, Adrian’s memoir, Milk-Blood: Growing up the son of a convicted drug trafficker, reflects powerful lived experience that is both a cautionary tale and incredibly inspiring. Adrian’s story also serves as a social case study charting events from 1979, when his father was arrested to the present.
This is just the beginning for Adrian as a creator. His memoir is just one way to tell his story and he plans to develop film and documentary projects from it. His next book will be about his extraordinary mother, Jan.
Adrain’s panel is Sunday the 9th at 11.30 am
