Does Australia Deserve A Book Expo?

DO YOU FEEL THAT AUSTRALIA DESERVES A BOOK EXPO?

DO YOU, THE READER, DESERVE TO DISCOVER OUR SMALL UNIQUE PUBLISHERS?

DO YOU DESERVE TO KNOW OUR NICHE PUBLISHERS WHO ARE KILLING SALES OVERSEAS BUT NOT HERE?

IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO THE ABOVE – BUY YOUR TICKET TO BOOK EXPO BY MIDDAY TODAY!!!

Three years ago I closed down my bookshop, due to books being purchased on-line and many of my customers read Kindles and I-Pads while travelling to work.

Three years ago many area became devoid of bookshops, so many were closing and while today some are re-opening there are still areas without a bookshop. I sat at home depressed and thought about the industry and realised that Australia, the 14th largest consumer of books in the world, did not have a Book Fair, we had Writers Festivals but not a Book Fair.

A Book Fair, where publishers promoted their books and authors to the reading public. Small publishers, niche publishers, publishers who struggled to have their books distributed into bookstores. Publishers who published niche topics and styles. A Book Fair where they could come once a year and have bookstore owners see their books and avid readers could discover their new favourite publishers and authors.

I knew the industry was struggling financially, I offered the cost of the booths without any mark-up beyond the cost of the venue and the Expo build. Each year this has left me with little to promote the Expo and I have had to add money from my own pocket to finance the Expo.

I have struggled for three years to organise and run an Expo that needed a staff of at least four. I have again offered booths at minimal cost and even offered some for free on the proviso they helped with promotion and ticket sales.

I have until midday today to confirm this year’s Expo, unless ticket sales pick up in the next three hours I will not be proceeding with this year Expo.
